Did they watch the same movie I did? I can understand that, if they have to consume a steady diet of play-by-the-numbers action movies, film critics get excited over something different and not formulaic. Three cheers though for the performances, costumes, efforts at period accuracy. Almost every person in the theater left with a WTH look on their faces. Purely for my own future memory, I'm copying down a line I thought was really funny: "Obviously you have chosen to keep the particulars of your dismissal from me. Fasten your seat belt. But for some odd reason, The Favourite made me cringe and feel sick half of the time. The costume design is one of the best parts of the film. The whole time watching it I was thinking "What the hell am I watching"? User Ratings While Lanthimos continues his eccentric and absurdist filmmaking tendencies, The Favourite is still an easy one to get behind and think deeply about. The three leads are incredibly good, with Rachel Weisz leading the way. That's not to take anything from Colman, whose performance is likely the most impressive of the three, but I do feel it's something to take note of. At some point the audio just got on my nerves, weird music. Infantile and broken, impulsive and lustful, needy and erratic all at once, she takes credit for almost every one of the most iconic moments of the film, which are several, through her delicious tantrums and hilarious excesses, but most notably, through a few long, mathematically precise close-ups, during which her expression changes so subtly, yet so richly, that she conveys an extensive array of emotions, disarming the viewer with desperate loneliness and melancholy. Sarah, the Duchess of Marlborough, who had already managed to become the Queen's friend, and-at least in this movie-something more than that as well, has come to exert real influence over the Queen because of her willingness to play to the monarch's desire for affection from other women. Armed with Lanthimos' trademark weirdness and three great lead performances, The Favourite is a truly unique spin on the typical royal court drama. I laughed heartily, cringed often, giggled like a schoolboy, blushed a little, and just had a really good time watching this film. Sidney Poitier’s 7 Most Memorable Performances, All Harry Potter Movies Ranked Worst to Best by Tomatometer. As for Weisz, she is becoming a muse for Lanthimos, who left her waiting at a diner for Colin Farrell in the frustratingly ambiguous ending of “The Lobster.” In “The Favourite,” she is perhaps the most sympathetic of the three, managing a public war between Britain and France amid her own private war with Stone. Check box if your review contains spoilers, Early 18th century. [Full review in Spanish]. But for me different and not predictable does not, in itself, produce a movie interesting enough to hold my attention for two hours. Olivia Colman puts in an award-winning performance in this hilarious bat-shit crazy picture which is by far Lanthimos at his uninhabited finest. It was clear early on, there is no real winner in this story, however it ends. We are playing different games" (or something I know that's off). When he eventually enters her bedroom, she asks if he is there to rape or woo her. For all the laughter The Favourite raises, it is also a tragedy, and like the very best comedies it offers some sympathy for the demise of people being used for our entertainment. The Favourite: Cinematography (Featurette) 0:30 0. Waypoint Entertainment, 50 F–k Yeah Moments of Female Empowerment in the Movies, March 10, 2019 The film focuses on the rivalry between these 2 women, Abigail and Sarah: lousy tricks, alliances, treacheries, ground shiftings, sex, ... Everything is allowed to obtain the favors of the queen! One of my favourite movies of last year. "The Favourite" is a period piece that features beautiful sets and costumes and a soundtrack of primarily Baroque music. I liked the 3 lead actresses, so I gave them a star each, but that's about it. The Favourite: The Vision Of Yorgos Lanthimos (Behind The Scenes) 2:37 0. I am no historian and know very little about the period in which the film is set. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing, and Abigail sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots. Jason Fraley | @JFrayWTOP. |, August 29, 2020 The Favourite cowriter Deborah Davis set to work on the film's screenplay as far back as the late 1990s, before producer Ceci Dempsey (who also worked on The Lobster), screenwriter Tony McNarma (Ashby), and Lanthimos got involved. This 10-digit number is your confirmation number. Yorgos Lanthimos... brings his singularly off-kilter vision to English history to produce a film that is eye-opening and eye-popping, and not a little subversive. Abigail thereafter begins to make a bid to win the Queen's favor, especially after she learns just how intimate Sarah and Anne's relationship really is. (I wrote a little bit about this phenomena of well-meaning parents and unhelpful wokeness in my review of Ralph Breaks the Internet of all places. They won't be able to see your review if you only submit your rating. This often works to blunt the advances of the charming Robert Harley (Nicholas Hoult), who shows his affection by tripping her and pushing her over like a cooties-fearing schoolboy on the playground. A filmmaker with enough maturity to transmit the most raw feelings of human reality accompanied by satire. | Rating: 5/5 While it is riveting and lively until two thirds well into the plot, some of the viewers might be left disappointed at how it becomes hopeless and dark. This movie is a masterpiece. We see her develop from believing that the best way to rise is through honor and loyalty, but quickly sees that everyone is playing political games and becomes ruthless in outstripping Sarah for the Queen's affection. As the movie opens, Abigail Hill, a distant relative of Sarah's, arrives at court with the hope of getting preferment there. [Full review in Spanish]. Abigail is immediately who we root for, as an outsider ready to work hard and earn a successful role near the Queen. Let me preface my review with me saying that I have never had a film experience where I have been genuinely uncomfortable in. I read the rave reviews before the film opened and really looked forward to it. By creating an account, you agree to the Privacy Policy Despite not having had a hand in writing the screenplay, Lanthimos seems to be in his wheelhouse, crafting a stirring yet (darkly) humorous rumination on humankind's innate desire to posses power, whether it be political, sexual, or anything in between. It’s weird without being alienating, dirty without being cheap. Weisz plays Sarah, the Duchess of Marlborough (husband of the Duke of Marlborough, the famous British soldier), while Stone plays her disgraced cousin Abigail, attempting a climb back up the social ladder. The premise is essential to all of the plot machinations: in early 18th century England, we are in Queen Anne's court, where political power and maneuvering is everything. A strongly acted costume drama that is completely brazen in its execution in the best possible ways. A nicely done expose of what knife-in-the-back politics can happen while the boys are off fighting a war (the English, again, with the French!). Sidney Poitier’s 7 Most Memorable Performances, All Harry Potter Movies Ranked Worst to Best by Tomatometer. The script is phenomenal and treats the characters very consistently but never one-dimensionally, by clearly showing their motivations but also portraying them realistically as humans. Waste of a plotline with 3 strong female leads and a waste of money. The costumes are fine, there is some intriguing lighting, and early in the movie some different types of lenses provide unusual shots. Yorgos Lanthimos' dryly funny historical feature is all about power, and that means literally wearing the pants in a strange time. Admittedly, though, The Favourite might have come off as all brains and style with no heart were it not for the terrific work by Colman, Weisz, and Stone. Coming Soon, Regal But what about... Music title data, credits, and images provided by, Movie title data, credits, and poster art provided by. A deliciously diabolical comedy of ill manners and outré palace intrigue. One would think this hack of a director would have learned this in film school. A sharp look into the intimacies of Monarchy and its perks. A filmmaker with enough maturity to transmit the most raw feelings of human reality accompanied by satire. As impressive as the movie's craftsmanship and performances are, its director's approach to storytelling and morose sense of humor aren't going to be everyone's cup of tea - and because his methods serve The Favourite quite well as a whole, it makes the moments where his approach doesn't work stand out all the more, by comparison. We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future. This is not my usual type of film but the trailer intrigued me so I thought I'd give it a whirl and I am glad that I did. The good news about the new film from Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite,” is that you are likely to emerge from it in good humor—bemused, or amused, or a mixture of the two. The ending is cringe worthy. The script and direction are all decent. And when I say, The Favourite is more cheer and juvenile than his previous work, I'm not inferring that Lanthimos loses his infamous psychologically poignant gift in this, I'm just inferring that it's done in a much more subtle way, hidden by cynical buffoonery.
