The George Washington Bridge of Your Body

Photo Jul 11, 5 52 13 PM

Here in Northern New Jersey, if you want to go to the Manhattan, The Big Apple, you take a drive over the George Washington Bridge (GWB). Most highways in the Eastern part of our nation travel through New Jersey with many passing through the GWB to connect to the metropolitan center of New York City.

What does this have to do with your body? Well, all the nerves in your body travel up your spine to form the brain stem that passes through the top two spinal bones in your neck, the Atlas (C1) and the Axis (C2). Named the Atlas because it holds your head up like the mythical Titan held the world, and the Axis because its the axle upon which the Atlas swivels. The final destination is Your Big Apple, your brain!

As your nerves pass through the brain stem, they relay billions of messages from your body to your brain and from your brain to your body. Just like the 100 million cars that cross the GWB each year. Talk about the possibilities for a traffic jam! You can’t afford one here. And all of us in North Jersey know what it’s like when a tractor trailer jackknifes on the GWB; major congestion and slow travel.

Well it’s the same thing when your upper neck (C1 & C2) loses proper alignment and gets stuck (SUBLUXATION, that’s what we chiropractors call it.) Vital communications between your brain and your body are interfered with, resulting in disruption of your brain/body functions. It may be slight at first, barely felt. but just as a single lane closed on the bridge can multiply the traffic jam on all roads leading to it. Likewise, an Atlas/Axis subluxation can disrupt many nerve pathways and ultimately affect your health.

Not only does Atlas/Axis subluxation interfere with nerve impulse traffic, it also restricts the normal flow of cerebral spinal fluid, the nurturing liquid that feeds all the cells of your brain and spinal cord. Imagine a twisted garden hose and you get the idea how fluid flow can be compromised.

Chiropractors have a variety of methods to fix this problem, and we’re the only ones who really know how to do it with finesse, style and results! Some techniques are very gentle, like the slight finger pressure we use on infants and older folk. Some other methods use instruments or classic spinal adjustments that can rock your world and create an instantaneous change in your brain, perceptions and coordination. See my post on how adjustments can improve brain function by 20%.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, needs to periodically have their upper neck checked for subluxation and corrected with an adjustment if needed. Yes I mean everyone. If you are alive and have a spine, you qualify. This is as critical to your health as your blood pressure, sugar levels, heart rate, breathing cycle, etc…

If chiropractic is new to you, don’t be fearful of trying something new. I’ve been performing upper neck adjustments for over 30 years and our first goal is to help you feel safe and relaxed during you adjustments. And the funny thing is that an Atlas/Axis adjustment is one of the greatest experiences you can ever have. You’re going to want to go AAAAAAHHHHH!

Call me at 201-836-9558 to have you GWB checked!

Reboot Your Brain – Chiropractic Adjustments Improve Brain Function by 20%!

After 30 years in practice, I’m still amazed by the testimony of my patients who tell me that after a fortunate chiropractic adjustment, they feel as if the fog has been lifted from their brain! They tell me they think more clearly, focus and concentrate more sharply, and have a feeling of peacefulness similar to meditation.

Well it’s an exciting time to be a chiropractor, as current research proves the effects of chiropractic adjustment and its ability to reboot your brain! It’s much like when you reset your computer by keying Control-Alt-Delete. Studies now show that spinal adjustments harmonize higher brain function, reduce nerve distortions, improve the connections between brain and body, and balance the four major brain wave patterns.

Here’s a sampling of current studies that measured changes that occur in the brain following chiropractic adjustment:

* Adjusting a malfunctioning spine changes brain function by almost 20%, most possibly in the prefrontal cortex, the “conductor” of the brain. [1]

* Cervical adjustment improves sensory-motor coordination, the ability of your brain and body to work together to improve your movements. [2]

* Chiropractic adjustment improves brain wave patterns and brain function, particularly the meditative Alpha waves associated with a greater degree of relaxation, health and healing. [3]

This is exciting stuff! No longer is Chiropractic only about neck and back pain, but a method to improve the functioning of the master control system, the brain and nervous system. Improved function of the “conductor” helps the body adapt to the stresses and strains of life with the result being greater health expression.

This is why it’s so important for anyone who is alive and has a spine to be checked periodically for vertebral subluxation, (spinal nerve stress) and be adjusted if necessary to restore and reboot the world’s most amazing computer network, The brain and spinal cord!

Please share this post and call my office at 201-836-9558 to set up an appointment to have your whole family’s spines checked for subluxation.

“Forging the Mind Body Connection” – Testimony From A Special Forces Soldier Who Does Yoga

yoga soldiers

“The practice of yoga – breathing, being present and letting go – taught me to allow things to happen naturally.” – Doug Kiesewetter, U.S. Army Special Forces

In this powerful article with video, a Cross Fit trained, Special Forces soldier describes how he was left in a shambles after his first yoga session. But he continued and stuck with the sessions, eventually finding that it allowed him to access untapped strength and new found mobility. Although he lost 30 pounds, his Cross Fit totals stayed the same! And he claims that his results were mainly because of the mental benefits he gained from yoga.

Yoga helped him forge a mind body connection that created a more clear frame of mind. He found he had an improved ability to assess life situations clearly and react more calmly and effectively.  His optimized mind body connection improved his life, his marriage and his ability to operate with his Special Forces brethren (who also have found mental strength and clarity at yoga class.)

It reminds me of the fact that the real purpose of Chiropractic is to reestablish the connection of the brain to the body through the spine. Your spinal cord is the real-deal mind body connection, orchestrating billions of signals from your brain cells to every tissue cell of your body. When your free moving spinal joints lock up or spinal cord gets kinked, interference is created in this vital connection, hampering the coordinated function of your brain and body systems. It’s the Chiropractors job to free up the locked spinal joints and un-kink the spinal cord so normal signal flow can be restored and Life energy can flow.

Innate intelligence 1

Respect that you have an innate, inborn intelligence within you that coordinates all the bodily and mental functions that keep you healthy and alive at any given moment. Chiropractic care and yoga share a common goal of creating a more optimized connection between all your body parts. The powerful result is greater awareness of your environment, improved mind body function, greater health, more resistance to disease, clearer thinking, and an optimal mind set of calm decision making and peaceful stress resolution.

It’s often said in Chiropractic philosophy that nature needs no help, just no interference. This is the new model of health and vitality. Trust your inborn, innate potential to grow, heal, function and express vibrant life through the regular practice of methods like chiropractic, yoga, clean eating, rest, and meditation. You’ll discover that you can enjoy your LIFE, and become more resilient when LIFE throws you the inevitable curve balls, challenges and obstacles.

There’s No Cramming with Chiropractic

Chiro 101
Remember the days of pulling an ‘all nighter’ for a major exam – trying to cram an entire semester’s worth of work in one, non-stop studying marathon?  Well, you can’t get away with that when it comes to your Health and Chiropractic.

There are some who wish they could simply go to the Chiropractor and have years of aches, pains and health issues erased in just one cram session – a Chiropractic all nighter if you will.  But like cramming for a test, a quick Chiropractic patch job is temporary at best.  Last minute adjustments for long standing problems will always yield fleeting results.  It takes sustained, consistent care over time to make measurable changes to bad spines.

So if you think you can re-call a cervical lordosis or undo years of poor bio-mechanics with one 24 hour sleepless Chiropractic binge, think again. There is no such thing as pulling an all nighter when it comes to get your health and your spinal integrity back.

Don’t Be a Zombie for Halloween!

“The tragedy of Life is not death, but what we let die within us while we live.” – Norman Cousins

Walking Subluxated
What do ‘walkers’ and the chronically Subluxated have in common? Both are doomed to aimlessly wander the earth more DEAD – than fully ALIVE!

Subluxation – definition –  sub – less than, lux – bright light (energy), -ation – state of; The state of having less light or energy.

It’s common for those suffering with chronic Subluxations to feel tired, fatigued and disinterested in Life – like they’re barely existing.  If left undetected, chronic Subluxations interferewith the normal flow of power in your Nerve System, leaving you physically, mentally and emotionally drained.  The result: you end up walking around in a trance-like state, clueless to the fact that you’d feel more alive if you simply got adjusted.

Do you know someone who’s meandering through life like the walking dead?  Nothing’s scarier than living hopelessly in a
‘zombie-like-fog’ because of Subluxations.  Reach out and tell
them how Chiropractic care can transform them from the walking dead to the well-adjusted!

The Surprising Link Between Chiropractic and Exercise

Source: Simon Senzon –

It amazes me to note that the developer of the chiropractic profession, Dr. B.J. Palmer, had a gym in his clinic back in the 1940’s. This officially makes him “old school”!

Although called the Rehab Lab, it was more in the tradition of an old school gym. Therapy wasn’t done to you, as in most physical therapy, but the patient used their own inner directed power to digest the energy of an adjustment.

You see, the sole purpose of chiropractic as per B.J.’s teachings, was to analyze the spine to detect and correct vertebral subluxations (misalignments).

These misalignments interfere with the normal flow of nerve signals from the brain to the body and back, compromising the function of that body part or muscles affected.

Once the vertebral subluxation is corrected, the signals can flow freely, restoring the function and life back to the  body parts and muscles that were compromised.

B.J. felt that once the interference was removed, the body part and muscles needed to be worked by the person to absorb that new found nerve energy for repair and growth.

It was up to the patient to have the incentive to exercise the body effectively by their own internal power and restore the health and strength to the body.

“B.J.’s Gym” had all the modern equipment of the time; arm developers, shoulder and back developers, leg pull machine and spirometry for lung strength. He even had some old school stuff like exercise bikes, gymnastic ladders and boxing heavy bags.

B. J. also felt that the human element was vital in a person’s recovery , and had a 2000 gallon fish tank installed to allow people to sit, relax and study the antics of fish. He also had beautiful gardens full of colorful plants and artifacts from around the world so people could rest and relax among them.

I would like to deeply thank chiropractic researcher and philosopher Simon Senzon DC for compiling this historical information for all to share and remember. His website, is a treasure drove of wonderful chiropractic history and philosophy.
